The conversion of the New Clark City Sports complex into a mass quarantine facility for coronavirus (COVID-19) patients gets underway.

Located in Capas, Tarlac, the NCC, which served as the main hub of the 30th Southeast Asian Games and host of the centerpiece athletics and aquatics events last year, will house 1,500 bed units for COVID-19 cases in Region III and other neighboring areas.

The NCC Athletes’ Village has been used as a quarantine facility since February.

Aside from the NCC, the ASEAN Convention Center and the NCC Government Building in Clark, Pampanga are also being converted into government-designated quarantine areas.

With more than 5,600 confirmed cases and more than three hundred deaths, the government has tapped available state-owned sports facilities to be converted into quarantine areas to decongest hospitals which are already in full capacity.

This week, the 112-bed Ninoy Aquino Stadium facility opened its doors to COVID-19 positive cases while the Rizal Memorial Coliseum inside the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila is also ready to accept patients.

Conversion of the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City has also commenced.
