Gilas Pilipinas will not have its “Super Marcio” for the time being.
Injured guard Marcio Lassiter is on track in his recovery, but will not be in action anytime soon.
Even so, the Philippine national team remains hopeful that its injured sniper will be good to go sooner than later.
“We’re hoping for the best for Marcio. We’re hoping he can still join us in the future,” head coach Yeng Guiao told reporters in their last practice at home before flying to Spain for a week-long training camp. “We’re not giving up that Marcio can suit up for Gilas.”
Nonetheless, coach Yeng and the national team already have a plan in place to cover for Lassiter’s absence. Asked who is the ready-made replacement, he answered, “Tingin ko, si Matthew pa rin.”
“Matthew” meant Matthew Wright, Phoenix’s very own marksman who is, indeed, more than capable of filling the shoes left behind by Gilas’ injured sniper.
For reference, in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup, Wright shot 40 percent from deep, with a total of 29 triples while Lassiter shot 38 percent from deep, with a total of 32 triples.
Without a doubt, the Philippines’ sniper rifle remains in good hands.
