Right now, Gilas Pilipinas has a 15-man lineup for the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China.
The list is made up Japeth Aguilar, Mark Barroca, Beau Belga, Andray Blatche, Robert Bolick, Poy Erram, Paul Lee, Gabe Norwood, CJ Perez, Kiefer Ravena, Matthew Wright, June Mar Fajardo, RR Pogoy, Troy Rosario, and Marcio Lassiter, who is currently injured.
From that 15, Coach Yeng can only take 12 to China for the World Championships and he will make the final cuts following a pair of games against Australia’s Adelaide 36ers starting Friday.
It’s a tough task to do.
The World Cup team is not the only problem for Guiao and his coaching staff as Gilas needs a crew for the Southeast Asian Games as well.
However, that’s not the main priority right now.
“Hindi namin mapag-usapan ng husto yung SEA Games, we’re trying to focus on the World Cup, except that meron na rin silang hinihinging list. So pinaguusapan namin internally kung sino yung nasa list,” coach Yeng Guiao said.
“Kung sakali man, sa China na pagusapan yung kapag nabuo na yung team. Buuin muna natin yun team bago tayo magisip ng bago,” he added.
One thing for sure for Guiao though is the fact that the players cut from the World Cup team will have slots for the SEA Games.
So that’s three players already on the team for the biennial meet to be hosted by the country later this year.
“What I’m assuring the guys is if there will be cuts made, kasi bale 15 yan kasama si Marcio, yung tatlo hindi makakalaro sa World Cup,” Guiao said.
“Yung tatlo na yun, I will make sure that they have a slot in the SEA Games. That’s the only thing I can guarantee at this point,” he added.
