The most important game for Gilas Pilipinas in the 2019 FIBA World Cup is without a doubt the opening showdown against Italy.
If the Philippines wants an actual shot to move on to the next round, the national team has to win that game.
Naturally, Gilas Pilipinas’ sole focus is that first game against the Italy. The national team has not even discussed plans against Serbia and Angola just yet.
Gilas only wants to take care of that Italy game first.
“Yun lang muna talaga. We have materials already on Serbia and Angola but we don’t want to distract the focus of the players from the Italy game,” head coach Yeng Guiao said.
“Wala pa kaming ini-input na schemes for Serbia, wala pa sa Angola. It might just be distractions at this point because we feel the most imporant game we will play will be the Italy game,” he added.
The Italy game is crucial, but Gilas is not turning a blind eye on Angola as well.
The African nation is the supposed underdog in Group D but by virtue of being a World Cup team, Angola is certainly more than capable of of getting wins.
If Gilas Pilipinas pulls off a win against Italy, the national team’s World Cup campaign could still go sideways if it can’t take care of Angola.
“We cannot take Angolia for granted. Even if we win against Italy but we lose to Angola, useless na,” Guiao said.
“Assume na natin na matalo tayo sa Serbia. If we’re successful against Italy, you have to win against Angola to make the next round. If you don’t walang kwenta yung panalo sa Italy. We’re not taking it for granted,” he added.
