It’s Day 3 of the 2019 FIBA World Cup and it’s already do-or-die time for Gilas Pilipinas.
The Philippine national team took a sound 46-point beating from Italy to start Group D play in Foshan, China Saturday and it doesn’t get any easier for Gilas Monday.
Gilas resumes preliminary play against world no. 4 Serbia, fresh from a dismantling of Angola two days before.
The Serbians are also gold medal favorites and are the biggest threat to dethrone mighty Team USA. Safe to say, Gilas has to play some incredible basketball in order to score an upset.
The Philippines’ second round hopes also lie in this game, and in the Italy-Angola game before. If the Italians win, Gilas has to match that in order to stay alive.
An Italy win coupled with another Gilas loss means the Philippines will be relegated to the classification phase, getting eliminated before group play is even over.
To have a chance against Serbia has to draw superb games from everyone, led by Andray Blatche. The Serbians are not short on big names with multiple NBA players, most notably Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic.
The Philippines-Serbia game will tip off at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Foshan International Sports & Cultural Arena in China.
