“We did our job just to make the game close, but I think Serbia is the number one team right now. That’s it,” Paul Lee said. (FIBA)
The final margin was actually worse compared to the Italy game but Gilas Pilipinas at least passed the eye test against Serbia in the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
Gilas was sharper to start against no. 4 Serbia in the 2019 FIBA World Cup in Foshan, China. The national team even took its first lead in the World Championships after a Paul Lee jumper, 9-7.
That was the highest of the high for Gilas in this Group D showdown as the Serbians mounted multiple big runs on their way to the second round with a 59-point victory.
It was a longshot for Gilas to actually win this game anyway but at least the national team got one goal accomplished especially after that horrible effort against Italy two days prior.
“Coach told us to just level up our game,” guard Paul Lee said.
“Our goal this game was to level up our game compared to the last game, the intensity on both offense and defense. I think nakuha naman namin yung goal namin but Serbia is too much for us,” he added.
Lee was the second leading scorer for Gilas with 15 points and despite the effort of the national team, they just couldn’t match Serbia’s superior talent and size on both ends.
Serbia, ranked no. 4 in the world, is the team widely seen as the main challengers for Team USA for the gold meda. Gilas got a close look Monday and got a 59-point beating after.
“We did our job just to make the game close, but I think Serbia is the number one team right now. That’s it,” Lee said.
