That’s another Puso-breaking loss for Gilas Pilipinas.
The Philippine national team once again dealt with frustrating offensive woes Wednesday, this time leading to an 84-81 overtime loss to a fighting Angola side to end Group D play of the 2019 FIBA World Cup in Foshan, China.
Down five in overtime, RR Pogoy hit a booming triple to push Gilas to within two, 81-83. However, Gilas Pilipinas took a while to foul before eventually sending Carlos Morais to the line with 7.7 seconds left.
Moiras split but with no more timeouts, the Philippines had to rush and Kiefer Ravena ended up missing a final three in transition, allowing Angola to preserve the victory.
For the third straight game in Foshan, Gilas struggled to buy buckets, shooting only 33 percent for the game and was down by as many as 12 in the fourth quarter.
Still, it was also in the fourth when the national team got things going with timely baskets from the five of Andray Blatche, Kiefer Ravena, RR Pogoy, Japeth Aguilar, and CJ Perez.
A triple by Pogoy and a slam dunk by Aguilar put the Philippines up, 69-65, with 3:18 to play in regulation only to see the Angolans recover and regain the lead thanks to Morais.
Down three, CJ Perez drilled a clutch triple with 33 seconds to go for a 73-all tie but after Gilas got a stop and a foul, the PBA’s top rookie seemed unaware of the time after the inbound and ended up wasting 5.2 seconds, never getting a decent shot for the win.
Gilas ended Group D play with a woeful 0-3 mark with the loss. The national team now heads to Beijing for the 17-32 classification phase. In the Chinese capital city, Gilas will take on Iran and Tunisia.
Andray Blatche finally showed up and played his best game for Gilas in Foshan, finishing with 23 points and 12 rebounds while Perez remained as the top local for the national team. CJ scored 17 points on top of seven rebounds in the loss.
Robert Bolick scored 10 for the Philippines while Japeth Aguilar and RR Pogoy were good for eight points each.
Angola got 20 points from Valdelicio Joaquim and 12 points each from Reggie Moore and Yanick Moreira.
Game hero Carlos Morais finished with 11 points for the Angolans.
