This is actually it for Gilas Pilipinas in the 2019 FIBA World Cup, it’s play game and then go home.
For the national team, they want to at least win and then go home.
Gilas Pilipinas ends the 17-32 classification phase in Beijing with a showdown against an old rival in Iran.
The Philippines has been bad in the World Championships, losing four straight games by a combined 127 points. Against Iran, Gilas wants a win in order to avoid finishing as the actual worst team in the World Cup.
That’s easier said than done however as Iran has actually put up strong performances in the World Cup. Despite finishing Group C with a 0-3 record, the Iranians finally closed a game out and handled Angola two days ago, the same Angola team that broke Gilas’ spirit in overtime.
Iran also swept the Philippines in the Asian Qualifiers less than a year ago so yes, Gilas is ina a bind and is an underdog until the very end in the World Cup.
Tip off for Philippines-Iran is at 8:00 p.m. live from the Wukesong Arena in Beijing.
