21-time PBA champion Tim Cone has been tapped to be the head coach for Gilas Pilipinas in the Southeast Asian Games
Veteran head coach Tim Cone will be stepping into the role of head coach for Gilas Pilipinas when they compete in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, as announced by Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio, Monday.
Cone, currently at the helm for fan-favorite Barangay Ginebra in the PBA, is the league’s most-titled mentor with 21 championships to his name. His coaching pedigree as well as his standing in the Philippine basketball community made him an easy front-runner for the head coaching position, which was recently vacated by Yeng Guiao following the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
"I spoke to Tim Cone last Saturday and he expressed interested but wanted to finish his game last night and talk to his family first," Panlilio said in a statement. "Now I’m very happy to announce that coach Tim has officially accepted the role as head coach for Gilas Pilipinas Men in the upcoming SEA Games.”
Panlilion also stated that Cone was already given the green light by SMC President Ramon Ang and SMC Sports director Alfranchis Chua.
"The resolution of our head coach situation should signify the start of our SEA Games preparations because the other countries like Indonesia are already putting in the work," Panlilio added.
Cone’s tenure however, will only be for the upcoming SEA Games which the Philippines will be hosting in November and December. Anything beyond that is still up for discussion, Panlilio stated.
"We’re still putting together a plan on how to move forward with our preparations for 2023 and beyond.”
