The newly-assembled Gilas Pilipinas squad for the upcoming 2019 Southeast Asian Games held their first practice Monday evening at the Meralco Gym in Ortigas.
Present from the 15-man pool were Stanley Pringle, Scottie Thompson, Greg Slaughter, Japeth Aguilar, Vic Manuel, Troy Rosario, LA Tenorio, Jayson Castro, Chris Ross, Art Dela Cruz, Matthew Wright and RR Pogoy.
Present but in street clothes were Christian Standhardinger and Marcio Lassiter. Both San Miguel standouts are still recovering from respective injuries.
The lone absentee from practice was June Mar Fajardo, who has some personal issues to attend to.
"It just brings back so many memories of 1998 for me," said newly-appointed Gilas head coach Tim Cone. The winningest head coach in the PBA, Cone was tapped to mentor the National Team following Yeng Guiao's departure following the 2019 FIBA World Cup. Cone's tenure however, will only be for the SEA Games.
"You walk into a room with those 15 great players, all of them superstars in their own right...just being around them, having an opportunity to interact with them. I see them from a distance so much, we play against them, we watch them on video, we know their weaknesses and strengths but we don't get a chance to talk and really get to know them, it's a completely different light. That, for me was the biggest impact, just being in the room," Cone continued.
The all-PBA lineup was announced last September 26 and will represent the country in the biennial meet that will take place in the Philippines from late-November to early-December.
