After spending their first few weeks working on offense, Gilas Pilipinas has finally shifted focus on its defensive schemes Monday.
Preparing for the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, the national team tackled defense for pretty much the first time.
Loaded with offensive talent, Gilas coming together on defense will be the more crucial part of its prep as the Philippines looks to extend its basketball reign in the region.
“Basically all we did was simple defensive drills,” head coach Tim Cone said after Gilas once again wrapped up a relatively quick practice session.
“I really want our guys to be thinking defense, talking about defense, and I want them to have great pride in defense,” he added.
With more than a couple of stud athletes on the roster, Cone wants to maximize that in order to build a stout defense ahead of the 2019 SEA Games.
And as a champion coach, the winnigest in PBA history, Cone hopes to put it all together for Gilas on the less glamorous side of the court.
“They’re great athletes, the really great defensive are athletes,” Coach Tim said of his national team.
“If we can get them to be thinking defense and using their athleticism for defense, I think we can put together a really good product out there. Defensively is where I, as a coach, can get them on them on the same page,” he added.
