With TNT star guard Jayson Castro sidelined with injury, Gilas Pilipinas is bringing in NLEX’s Kiefer Ravena as replacement for the 2019 Southeast Asian Games
Kiefer was present Monday as Gilas took on the ABL’s San Miguel-Alab Pilipinas in the first of two practice games.
But while Ravena didn’t suit up just yet, Kiefer has been added to the Gilas pool, pushing the national team’s number back to 15 players for the SEA Games.
“Coach Tim asked us if Kiefer could join the pool especially [since] Jayson couldn’t play,” team manager Gabby Cui played.
“We talked to SBP, we’re cleared,” he added.
Ravena joining the Gilas pool doesn’t mean he’ll play in the SEA Games next month.
Coach Tim Cone still has to cut his national team down to 12 final players. For now, Kiefer will just come in to complete the current 15-man pool with Castro out.
“I’m pretty sure naman papayagan ako ng NLEX. More than anything else, the decision is not on my hands,” Ravena said.
“I just have to wait, first things first is ayoko ko makagulo sa kanila. You see the team, they’re complete already. But with coach Tim, it’s a learning opportunity for me and I’m really thankful for that,” he added.
