Gilas Pilipinas was given a dose of reality Monday as the national team took a beating at the hands of Alab Pilipinas in a practice game at the Meralco Gym.
But despite taking an L this time, Alab head coach and Gilas assistant Jimmy Alapag says that the national team will have no reason to worry too much when it’s time to play in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
Gilas will be fine according to the former national team captain.
“Other Southeast Asian teams won’t have three imports. So obviously that was a big advantage for us,” Alapag said as his Alab stopped Gilas on its tracks with a 93-89 win.
“It will be challenging for this group, considering how long the PBA season has already been. But you look at the caliber of players that on that side, with the leadership and experience, we’ll be fine,” he added.
Gilas Pilipinas is stacked with talent from top to bottom.
And as long as the national team continues to prepare well, that talent will ultimately win out in the SEA Games.
“For Gilas, again, it’s just the incredible amount of size and shooting. Everytime coach Tim made a sub, it was Japeth and June Mar or Christian and Vic Manuel. Then of course, the guard rotation is one of the best,” Alapag said.
“The depth of that team is really going to be our strength for the SEA Games,” coach Jimmy added.
