SEA Games: Close loss to Alab the perfect lesson for Gilas

“We understand how hard this is gonna be. This is not gonna be easy. It’s a good message for everybody.” — Coach Tim Cone after Gilas Pilipinas lost a narrow decision to Alab Pilipinas in a practice game.
Gilas Pilipinas hoped for a lesson as they engaged Alab Pilipinas for a pair of practice games in back-to-back weeks.
The national team got just that as Alab handed them a 93-89 loss Monday at the Meralco Gym.
It’s the first loss for Gilas on its buildup for the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
“It’s a step back, but I think it’s a good step back that we have,” head coach Tim Cone said.
“We understand how hard this is gonna be. This is not gonna be easy. It’s a good message for everybody,” he added.
Despite losing to Alab, Gilas still has some good stuff to take from the game.
Add that to the fact that they now know winning games will not be as easy, it gives the national team actual stuff to work on and not just try to overwhelm opponents with sheer talent.
“The good news is we battled. Guys were pulling for each other all the time. We were unselfish. We tried hard on defense, although we were disorganized. Those were all the positives that we wanna move forward on,” coach Tim said.
“Hopefully this is one step back, two steps forward. It was a good step for us. I just hate losing, that’s all,” Cone added.
