MANILA — Gilas Pilipinas saved its best for last in Day 1 of 3x3 men’s basketball at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
The Philippines dominated Thailand Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Center here, taking a convincing 21-10 victory.
Thanks to the win, Gilas will enter Monday’s action with a clean 4-0 mark.
Thailand actually put up a strong fight early but Gilas, sparked by the great tandem of CJ Perez and Mo Tautuaa, unloaded a 10-0 run to pull away.
For good measure, Jason Perkins picked up steam late and Chris Newsome capped the win with a tough layup to go.
Perkins once again led Gilas in scoring with seven points. Mo Tautuaa added six and CJ Perez had five.
Chris Newsome got three points, including a nice highlight play when he dropped a two-hand slam dunk off a steal.
Gilas plays another two games in the preliminary round Monday.
