MANILA — Gilas Pilipinas’ path to the gold medal starts off with a win.
Gilas overcame a slow start to beat Indonesia in men’s 3x3 play of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games Sunday, picking up a close 21-17 decision at the Filoil Flying V Center here.
Indonesia raced to a 3-0 start as Gilas took a while to get going.
But after Jason Perkins scored the national team’s opening basket, it was off and running for Gilas.
Perkins bulldozed his way inside for a team-high nine points. The PBA's reigning Rookie of the Year scored three straight late to put the Philippines up, 20-16.
CJ Perez was a spark, hitting three treys on his way to eight points. Perez also hit the final basket to end the game.
Mo Tautuaa finished with three points for the Philippines while Chris Newsome had one basket.
Newsome’s hit broke a 16-all tie late after Indonesia tied things up with back-to-back hits from deep.
The Philippines will resume play in the afternoon with three games against Myanmar, Vietnam, and Thailand.
