MANILA — Despite a slow start, Gilas Pilipinas is 4-0 in men’s 3x3 basketball of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
After working to put away Indonesia in its opening game Sunday, Gilas got better as the day progressed, eventually ending with an impressive victory over Thailand.
With four wins and no losses, the Philippines is undoubtly the gold medal favorites now as 3x3 action heads to a pivotal Day 2.
“With a 4-0 start, it definitely improves our chances [for a gold medal] but by no means we’re finished with our work,” guard Chris Newsome said.
“We’re not finished until the last game is done. Now is not the time to celebrate,” he added.
Even as their play improved throughout Day 1, Newsome says Gilas can always step it up even more.
And as the medal rounds near, the national team’s focus intensifies as well.
“There were some lapses where we gave up 2-point shots. We want them to work for tough ones,” Newsome said,
“Defense is the key for us. As long as we play defense, we’re always gonna have a chance in the ball game... that’s something that we need to take with us to tomorrow into the medal round if we’re gonna come out with the gold,” he added.
