MANILA — Much like her electric performance in the 2018 FIBA 3x3 World Cup, the 2019 Southeast Asian Games here allowed Janine Pontejos to once again thrill a rabid home crowd.
The diminutive sharpshooter dazzled Sunday as 3x3 play started at the Filoil Flying V Center for the 30th SEA Games, serving as a key cog for Gilas Pilipinas women’s perfect 3-0 start.
Her ball handling skills and incredible range have once again captured the attention of Filipino fans.
Still, as she’s getting showered by cheers, Pontejos tries to block everything out while on the court.
She and the rest of Gilas women have a gold medal to win.
“Hindi ko na iniisip yung crowd favorite,” Janine said.
“Iiniisip ko yung game and yung focus namin sa laro. Kailangan manalo kami every game,” she added.
Gilas women are a perfect 3-0 in the SEA Games but the national team has been challenged that’s for sure. The wins against Malaysia and Indonesia were certainly not easy.
As 3x3 action moves to a pivotal Day 2 Monday, Pontejos and the rest of her crew intend to keep their focus and finish the day with gold.
“Samin, panibagong araw na naman,” she said.
“Kailangan tuly-tuloy pa rin yung momentum namin. Kailangan manalo kami hanggang matapos yung 3x3 at makuha yung gold,” Pontejos added.
