MANILA — Golden moment for Gilas Pilipinas women.
The Philippines survived a late Thailand rally Monday at the Filoil Flying V Center here, securing a 17-13 win to capture gold in 3x3 basketball of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
Gilas was up 10 as Afril Bernardino went full beast mode for the national team.
However, Thailand would prove to be a tough out, making things interesting in the final minute.
But the fighting Filipinas got the stops they needed to win the country’s first-ever gold medal in 3x3 basketball, which became an official medal sport in the SEA Games this year.
Bernardino went for 10 points in the gold medal match for easily her best game of the SEA Games. It was also the perfect revenge performance against Thailand, who beat Gilas earlier in the day in a thrilling overtime decision.
Janine Pontejos added three points for Gilas women while Jack Animam finished with two points. Clare Castro was good for a basket.
After the Philippines' gold medal conquest, the official ranking for the first-ever 3x3 women's basketball tournament in the SEA Games is Thailand going for silver and Malaysia settling for a bronze medal.
