MANILA — With two events in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, Gilas Pilipinas women took their preparation seriously.
National team players barely had time to go home as they worked to make sure gold medals will be won.
After taking gold in 3x3 basketball Monday, sacrifices proved to be worth it for Afril Bernardino and Gilas women.
“Nung nakita ko siya, naiisip ko na worth it yung sacrifices na ginawa namin,” Bernardino said after she embraced her father after the Philippines claimed victory over Thailand in women’s 3x3 basketball in the SEA Games.
“Kasi everyday kami nagpa-practice, even weekends, so di na kami nakakauwi sa mga families namin,” she added.
Gilas women didn’t only target gold in 3x3 basketball, the national team also has its sights on finally winning first place in 5x5 basketball.
Family time took a hit as Bernardino and her crew prepared for a shot at history in the SEA Games.
With one gold medal won, all that hard work is paying off.
“Nung niyakap ko siya sobrang higpit,” Afril said on her moment with her father.
“Sumisigaw ako sabi ko kay papa, worth it yung sacrifices na nangyari samin,” she added.
