MANILA — That elusive gold medal for Gilas Pilipinas women is finally within reach.
The Philippines advanced to the Finals of women’s 3x3 basketball in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, repeating over Vietnam with a 21-12 win Monday at the Filoil Flying V Center here.
Tested by the Vietnamese once again, the Filipinas came through anew with Janine Pontejos leading the way.
The diminutive sharpshooter broke a 10-all tie with a mid-range jumper.
Pontejos then hit back-to-back treys for a 16-12 lead for Gilas women. Finally up seven and looking to finish, Janine hit the final dagger to send the Philippines to the final against Thailand.
Heating up late, Pontejos scored eight points to lead Gilas. Jack Animam had six, keeping the Philippines close as Vietnam got its run midway through.
Afril Bernardino and Clare Castro had four and three points respectively for Gilas women in the big win.
