MANILA — Gilas Pilipinas makes a great impression in its 2019 Southeast Asian Games opener.
Sending an all-PBA team for the first time in SEA Games history, Gilas pounded Singapore Wednesday at the MOA Arena, scoring a comfortable 110-58 victory.
Winners of the last 12 SEA Games gold medals, Gilas’ quest for a lucky 13 straight is officially underway with the 52-point decision, which was certainly a far cry from two years ago when the Philippines struggled to put away a pesky Singapore team in the semifinals in Kuala Lumpur, 68-60.
Stanley Pringle scored Gilas’ first eight points to set the tone for the national team early.
Matthew Wright then hit three straight triples late in the first quarter and Gilas never looked back, coasting the rest of the way as Troy Rosario and June Mar Fajardo took care of business against an overmatched Singapore frontline.
Coming off the bench, Rosario led the Philippines in scoring with 15 points.
Vic Manuel, making his Gilas debut, added 14 points also off the bench. Pringle likewise got 14 for the game while Wright fired 13 points in the win.
June Mar was good for 12 markers.
For Singapore, only one player scored in double figures with Wei Kwek finishing with 10 points for the game.
Gilas is back in action Friday against Vietnam.
