MANILA — Road to gold is underway for Gilas Pilipinas women.
The Philippines surged past Indonesia Thursday in women’s 5x5 basketball, with Gilas using a strong second half to score a 63-56 win at the MOA Arena.
Gilas women’s second unit provided the spark in the third quarter and the big guns finished the job in the fourth, giving the Philippines its first win of the SEA Games.
With the victory, Gilas women also avenged a 68-78 loss to Indonesia from two years ago in Kuala Lumpur, a game that pretty much cost the Philippines the bronze medal.
Janine Pontejs led the Gilas women offense with 16 points while Kelly Hayes added 12 points.
After the two, the Philippines still also got all-around production from Jack Animam (nine points and 12 rebounds), Ria Nabalan (seven points), and team captain Afril Bernardino (seven points).
Indonesia got 16 points from Yuni Anggraeni in the loss.
Gilas women will next take on two-time defending champion Malaysia Sunday still at the MOA Arena.
