SEA Games: Afril’s 18-19 game powers Gilas women past Malaysis

MANILA — Afril Bernardino wants that gold medal bad.
Afril went beast mode again Sunday, leading Gilas Pilipinas women to a pulsating 81-75 win over two-time defending champion Malaysia in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games at the MOA Arena here.
Bernardino finished with an insane 18 points and 19 rebounds in the victory, pushing Gilas women to 2-0 for the tournament. Afril also hit the two free throws with 26 seconds to go to ice the game.
Afril got major help from her 3x3 teammates as Jack Animam powered through to finish with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Ana Castillo dropped 11 points, her biggest ones being the booming three to tie the game at 74-all. Janine Pontejos also added 10 points, including four straight in the final 90 seconds to turn a one-point game into a 79-74 Gilas women lead.
Gilas women now sets up a date against Thailand on Tuesda to decide the gold medal. Both countries will enter with identical 2-0 marks.
Malaysia got 18 points from Fook Yee Yap but their reign as back-to-back SEA Games champion officially ends at the hands of the Filipinas.
