MANILA — On this current Gilas Pilipinas team, only Kiefer Ravena, Troy Rosario, Christian Standhardinger, and Greg Slaughter have won gold in the Southeast Asian Games before.
The rest of the team, including head coach Tim Cone, haven’t won any sort of gold medal.
That could change Tuesday as the Philippines meets Thailand in the Finals of the 2019 SEA Games here.
It has been a challenging year for Gilas Pilipinas, and ending 2019 with a gold medal win can help erase some bitter memories.
This is a big deal right here.
“I asked them yesterday, how many of you guys have won a gold medal in your career? I've been in the league 31 years, and I've been coaching in the PBA for 31, I've never won a gold medal. Won a few championships, but not a gold medal, so this is special,” Cone said, sitting besides Chris Ross after Gilas advanced to the finals after a win against Indonesia Monday.
“I know Chris hasn't won a gold medal, and most, I think 8 or 9 of our guys haven't won a gold medal. So now that it's this close, I think our guys are gonna be ready,” he added.
Standing in the way of Gilas is Thailand, who has also rolled all the way to the Finals.
The Philippines will be favored but based on what he’s seen in this tournament, playing against Thailand will be Gilas’ ultimate test.
“I think we'll be in good shape. Easier said than done, though. We're gonna … It's gonna be a struggle for us, I feel it,” coach Tim said.
“But the Finals is the Finals. I think the guys are gonna be all keyed up,” he added.
Gilas Pilipinas vs. Thailand for the gold medal of the 2019 SEA Games will be at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the MOA Arena.
