MANILA — LA Tenorio is a Gilas Pilipinas veteran so when he says that the 2019 Southeast Asian Games team is special, that means a lot.
The all-PBA Gilas steamrolled the competition in the SEA Games, capping a dominant performance with a 115-81 win over Thailand Tuesday to win the country’s 13th consecutive basketball gold medal.
For Tenorio, and a lot of the PBA players on the team, it was his first gold in his very first SEA Games.
“This team is special. Siguro aside from our time, the last World Cup 2014, this team is very special also because itong team na to full of superstars na nagsama-sama,“ Tenorio said.
“Yun yung sinasabi ni Coach Tim na we don’t have to be an all-star team so our goal is aside from getting the gold medal, is really yung pagiging special ng team na to after this SEA Games. We got the gold medal and this is one of the most special teams na nasalihan ko rin,” LA added.
As one of the oldest SEA Games teams ever, most PBA players in this Gilas team are probably one-and-done for the biennial event.
That factor makes it special says Tenorio.
Some players like Chris Ross and Vic Manuel made their national team debuts here. Some players, like June Mar Fajardo and LA himself, finally won gold after years of service for Gilas.
“You’ll never know what’s going to happen to each and everyone of us kung saan kami mapupunta and kung makakapaglaro pa kami,” Tenorio said.
“Maybe this is the first and the last sa akin or some of the players also but na-achieve naman namin yung goal namin to not only get the gold medal but to be a special team,” he added.
