Gilas Pilipinas’ head coach will be on an interim basis when the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers kick off February with the Philippines taking on Thailand and Indonesia.
The 24-man pool is set but the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) is yet to make an official announcement on the team’s coaching staff.
However, it appears that FIBA’s official website is first to the news as the Asia Cup lists the trio of Mark Dickel, Sandy Arespacochaga, and Nenad Trunic as coaches for Gilas Pilipinas.
Dickel is TNT’s active consultant and has been with the KaTropa since the 2018 Governors’ Cup. This would be his first official stint with the Philippine national team.
Meanwhile, Coach Sandy is one of the top deputies not only for TNT but for the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the UAAP. He’s also a veteran assistant coach for many of our national teams.
Trunic is a Serbian mentor who had previous stints in Iran.
“We’re not ready to announce a full-time coach in February for sure,” SBP President Al Panlilio said in a previous interview.
“But we’re hoping that… the next window is November, so it gives us time to get the right coach moving forward. It has to be full-time coach,” he added.
