To start the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers, Gilas Pilipinas assembled an intriguing lineup that has a mix of PBA and amateur players.

But for the 24 players the national team called up, Gilas is already down two star players.

Christian Standhardinger and Japeth Aguilar have both begged off for the first window this month due to health and personal reasons.

Standhardinger, who just won BPC with Northport in the Governors' Cup is on the mend with knee issues while Japeth, who just won a title with Ginebra, is set to go on his long-delayed honeymoon.

June Mar Fajardo, who was not included in the initial 24-man pool, is also out with leg fracture.

With three of the national team's tallest players out, Gilas' dynamics changes a little bit for the February games against Thailand and Indonesia.

"Losing [Christian and Japeth] is really tough, we have to see what we can do about that," program director Tab Baldwin told ABS-CBN Sports.

"Having Poy [Erram] and Ping [Pingris] on the sidelines in street clothes is a big problem," he added.

19 players showed up to Gilas' first practice Thursday but only 15 were active.

Included in the inactive list were Poy Erram and Marc Pingris, the other big men who are already in the PBA.

"Hopefully we get as many of those guys back healthy as soon as possible," Baldwin said.

"Otherwise we're gonna be really small and really fast," he added.

As for Standhardinger and Aguilar, Baldwin says they're not quite sure if they can replace those two players in the original 24-man pool.

"I don't know if we're allowed to. We had a deadline for submitting 24 names and we did that," he said.

"Whether that can be changed or now, we're tying to get clarification," Baldwin added.
