Well, maybe those teasers did mean something after all.
In a video interview posted on TMZ.com, retired boxer Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather junior shared that he’s planning on applying for a mixed martial arts license and hopes to be able to fight.
“Everything takes time, eventually, we’re gonna apply for the license, and hopefully we can fight.” said Mayweather.
The 41-year old also added that he’s willing to put in the time to get some proper MMA training in before he finally competes.
“I’ll probably need a little longer, even if it takes six to eight months, whatever it takes, we wanna make sure that everything is done correctly and everything is done the right way.”
A five-division world champion and owner of a perfect 50-0 boxing record, Mayweather is considered as one of the best boxers to ever step foot in the ring, albeit having a cautious style that wasn’t too popular with fans.
Mayweather retired in 2015, but returned to the ring in 2017 for a mega-money fight against then-UFC champion Conor McGregor, a fight he won via TKO in the tenth round.
Whether or not Mayweather actually gets into MMA remains to be seen, but it would definitely be interesting to see one of the most polarizing figures in combat sports cross over.
Could a Mayweather-McGregor rematch inside the MMA cage be in the works?
