Basilan drew first blood in the opener of the MPBL Lakan Cup
Basilan is the first team inside the winners circle in the MPBL Lakan Cup after fending off newcomer Bicol, 94-83, Wednesday at MOA Arena.
The Steel got contributions from up and down their retooled roster with four players in double-digits led by Jay Collado who posted a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double. "Yung chemistry namin, kahit bago kami, matagal na rin naman kaming magkakakilala so alam na rin namin paano sila sa laro," he told reporters post-game.
He was backstopped by Leo Gabo, his former teammate with the Quezon City Capitals a year ago, who tallied 13 points, five assists, and two steals as well as Chris Dumapig who had 13 markers, 10 rebounds, five dimes, and two pilfers of his own in the Mindanaoans' season-opening win.
Gab Dagangon also added 15 points of his own, none bigger than the basket and bonus that punctuated a 12-2 run that repulsed the Volcanoes' late rally and re-increased the Basilan edge to 12, 87-75. "It was a game of runs. Sila yung talagang mas gusto nung (dulo) kaya sa timeout, sinabi ko lang sa kanilang ibalik yung laban nila," head coach Jerson Cabiltes said.
Alwin Alday paced rookie team Bicol with 23 points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists while ex-pro Alex Nuyles chimed in 22 markers and seven boards.
