Batangas defeated Muntinlupa behind 25 points from Jeff Viernes.
New-look Batangas went to work right away in its first game in the MPBL Lakan Cup and ultimately warded off very game Muntinlupa, 79-70, at home inside the Batangas City Coliseum on Saturday.
In their maiden outing under the tutelage of Goldwin Monteverde, the Athletics came out with guns blazing and counted four players in double-digits.
Leading the way for their season-opening win was holdover Jeff Viernes who poured in 25 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Newcomer Jason Melano and stalwart Val Acuna also helped out with the heavy lifting with the former finishing with 16 points and the latter ending with 13 markers as Batangas bested the Cagers in a rematch between the two Finalists from the regional league’s initial staging.
For Munti, GJ Ylagan was the lone player in double-digit scoring with 18 points.
In the day’s other game, rookie team Nueva Ecija made quite the first impression by disposing of Marikina, 78-76.
Marlon Monte had 19 points to top the scoring column for the MiGuard who broke through in just their first try.
