San Juan starts MPBL title defense with thrilling triumph over Bacoor

Larry Rodriguez posted a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double and made a clutch free throw as San Juan defeated Bacoor in the MPBL.
San Juan wasted no time proving that all those after the MPBL Lakan Cup trophy will have to go through it, silencing fellow powerhouse Bacoor, 77-76, in its home court Strike Gym on Friday.
Mike Ayonayon led four Knights in double-digits with 22 points on top of 10 rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
John Wilson and Jhonard Clarito then contributed 16 points apiece for San Juan which retained most of its championship core for its title defense.
Larry Rodriguez also posted a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double all while punching through a pressure-packed free throw with seven ticks to go that ultimately wound up as the difference between the two teams.
For the Strikers, reigning and defending MVP Gab Banal, of course, showed the way with 17 points to go along with eight assists and seven rebounds.
Meanwhile, Bulacan was also triumphant in its season debut after rallying by Cebu, 75-71.
JR Alabanza topped the scoring column for the Kuyas with 11 points while Dan Sara, Jovit Dela Cruz, and Jhan Nermal all added 10 markers each.
William Mcaloney paced the Sharks with 14 points.
