The Caloocan Supremos - Victory Liner reigned supreme on Thursday, dumping the SOCCSKSARGEN Marlins 93-77 in front of their home fans at the Caloocan Sports Center in action at the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Season.
Rene Pacquiao's 15-point, 12-rebound night, achieved mostly in the first three quarters, was crucial in the Supremos leveling their record at 5-5 with a fourth straight win.
The Marlins took a surprising 44-43 lead at the half, but early in the third SOCCSKSARGEN suffered a big blow when forward Norman Gonzales was whistled for a technical after tangling with Mark Sarangay. It was his fourth foul and would limit his minutes.
Meanwhile, AJ Mandani, Damian Lasco and Pacquiao were on point to give Caloocan a 70-57 lead entering the fourth period. A triple from Paul Sanga early in the quarter gave the Supremos a 76-57 lead and the rout was on.
There was a little drama in the fourth when Sarangay and Rick Maurillo clashed under the basket contesting a rebound. Sarangay was slapped with a disqualifying foul and repaired to the shower room early.
"Nag-adjust kami kase alam namin physical sila maglaro. Sabi lang ni coach wag patulan," said Pacquiao afterwards.
Expansion SOCCSKSARGEN suffer an eighth loss in as many games. Exe Biteng and Jerome Juanico co-topscored for the Marlins with 12 points apiece.
Makati Super Crunch edged the Basilan Steel Jumbo Plastic 86-80 to improve to 6-2 in the second of three games on Thursday.
Jeckster Apinan led Makati with 21 points.
The games was nip and tuck all the way and had a fitting finish. A lay-up by Josh Torralba and a pair of baskets by Apinan pushed Super Crunch ahead 81-73 with a minute and a half to go. But a determined Basilan side refused to give up. Hesed Gabo and Irven Palencia knocked in buckets then Gab Danganon's three-ball pulled Basilan to 83-80 in the final minute. But with 14 ticks left Torralba made sure of the W with a triple of his own.
Basilan slide to 6-4 despite out-rebounding Makati 52-35. A 13-point night for Jay Collado led the Steel.
In the first game of the day the slipper fit for Cinderella team Marikina Shoemasters. The Mariqueños finally broke into the win column, defeating the Valenzuela Classic SPV Top Marketplace 70-65. It's their first win in 9 games this season.
The Shoemasters l got 45 bench points including 13 apiece from Yves Sazon and Daryl Pascual.
With 4 minutes to go the Shoemasters led 66-55 but Paolo Hubalde cut the deficit to 66-64 with just over a minute to go with a driving lay-up. Marikina held on to ice the game from the line. Hubalde led all scorers with 20 points as his team continues its free fall to go 4-7.
