Kobe Bryant has won championship rings and MVP awards, but he could soon be adding an Oscar to his mantle.
Bryant's "Dear Basketball" was nominated in the Best Animated Short category for the 2018 Oscars, it was announced Tuesday (Tuesday evening, PHL time).
Based on the poem written by Bryant to announce his retirement back in 2015, the short was directed by Disney veteran Glen Keane, who was also the supervising animator. Legendary composer John Williams did the music.
"Dear Basketball" was previously nominated for a 2018 Annie Award and won a Special Jury Award at the 2017 World Animation Celebration, per IMDB.com.
Bryant expressed shock and joy at the nomination, posting on Instagram: "What?? This is beyond the realm of imagination. It means so much that The Academy deemed #DearBasketball worthy of contention. Thanks to the genius of @glenkeaneprd & John Williams for taking my poem to this level. It’s an honor to be on this team."
