The first season of the NBA 2K League saw players primarily from the United States fill up the rosters of the clubs. That could change in year two.
Brendan Donohue, Managing Director of the NBA 2K League, revealed on the maiden episode of NBA 2K League: The Post Up, the league would have a special Asia-Pacific Tournament, with the winners becoming eligible for the 2019 NBA 2K League Draft.
"If you live in Asia, it's tougher for you to make the [2K] league because of technical issues or to be able to matchmake and find players to play with," Donohue said. "We're going to look to find 20 to 30 players from the Asia-Pacific region that will be invited to take part in this, based on their performance in combine, and also prior tournaments."
The in-person tournament will have their winners become draft eligible in addition to the other players identified through the Qualifier and Combine, the 2K League added in a release.
Details of the tournament, such as the date, have not yet been hammered out as of writing.
If that's not enough to convince you that the 2K League has its eyes set on global competition, Donohue also hinted at league expansion beyond the 30 teams currently in the Association.
"While we're focused on having all 30 NBA teams in the league at some point, and we know we will at some point, we think this is a global league," Donohue added. "And so we see there being franchises all over the world."
