With multiple NBA stars reportedly announcing their intention to withdraw from consideration for Team USA's 2019 FIBA World Cup roster, the organization has begun to move on with some different faces.
Per The Athletic's Shams Charania, Team USA has supposedly added Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart and Chicago Bulls forward Thaddeus Young to the training pool, opening up a path for them to compete in China.
Fans of the American national team can also expect more additions over the coming days. According to The Athletic's Joe Vardon, Team USA is also looking to include another Celtic, Jaylen Brown, plus new Warriors guard D'Angelo Russell and Magic forward Aaron Gordon, in the training pool.
Vardon added that also on the list as possible replacements are Mike Conley (Utah Jazz), Josh Richardson (Philadelphia 76ers), and Julius Randle (New York Knicks). Alternately, he writes, Team USA could promote several young guns from their Select Team, mentioning the likes of Trae Young (Atlanta Hawks), De'Aaron Fox (Sacramento Kings), Joe Harris (Brooklyn Nets), Mitchell Robinson (New York Knicks), and Jarrett Allen (Brooklyn Nets).
Over the last couple of days, Anthony Davis, James Harden, Eric Gordon, CJ McCollum, Bradley Beal, Zion Williamson, and Tobias Harris opted not to participate in the Team USA training camp in Las Vegas in August, and the World Cup tournament.
Holdovers from the first announced pool are Damian Lillard, Kyle Lowry, Kemba Walker, Donovan Mitchell, Harrison Barnes, Andre Drummond, Kevin Love, Khris Middleton, Myles Turner, Kyle Kuzma, Brook Lopez, Paul Millsap, Jayson Tatum, and PJ Tucker.
