Could an LA reunion be in the works for Dwight Howard and the Lakers?
The team is in need of a center following the ACL injury suffered by offseason addition DeMarcus Cousins, and per media reports, the team is interested in current Memphis Grizzly Dwight Howard.
Howard was traded to the Grizzlies from the Washington Wizards back in July for CJ Miles, but does not figure into the rebuilding team's plans.
The Lakers are expected to request permission soon to speak to Dwight Howard and there's mutual interest between the eight-time All-Star and L.A. in wake of DeMarcus Cousins' torn ACL, league sources tell @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium.— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) August 18, 2019
Per Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Lakers were granted permission by the Grizzlies to talk to Howard. ESPN's Ramona Shelburne reports though that the move is "more 'due diligence'", though he still has a good relationship with team owner Jeanie Buss.
Regarding the Lakers and Dwight Howard, a team source says their interest is more “due diligence “ after the Boogie injury. Memphis has granted permission for Dwight and his camp to speak to teams, one of which is the Lakers.— Ramona Shelburne (@ramonashelburne) August 18, 2019
As @VeniceMase and I discussed the other day on @ESPNLosAngeles ... Dwight may have left town on bad terms with some in LA. But he always had a good relationship with Jeanie Buss. Remember, Jeanie and Phil tweeting at him during the recruiting process.— Ramona Shelburne (@ramonashelburne) August 18, 2019
So I don’t think this decision would be about bridges burned. More like whether the Lakers feel Dwight Howard would be their best option after the loss of Boogie. Still very early in that decision making process.— Ramona Shelburne (@ramonashelburne) August 18, 2019
Howard played one season with the Lakers from 2012-13, averaging 17.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks. He was hampered by issues with his shoulder and back though, as well as conditioning issues, and then opted to sign a free agent contract with the Houston Rockets in the summer of 2013.
Charania added though that the Lakers are also interested in Joakim Noah, who played for the Grizzlies last season.
The Lakers have been patient in approach since Cousins' injury, and another accomplished veteran center on the market is Joakim Noah. Howard is expected to be eventually released by Memphis. https://t.co/mvLx2jsS8Q— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) August 18, 2019
Howard played nine games for the Washington Wizards last season, with averages of 12.9 points and 9.2 rebounds, as he dealt with pain in his glutes and a hamstring issue.
