“Kailangan pa naming mag-gel. Importante ang chemistry sa laro eh, pero pati yun mukhang kinukulang pa kami.” --- Francis Munsayac
After suffering an injury and sitting out an entire season, Francis Munsayac weighs in on his observations and what he thinks his squad struggled and continues to contend with.
With ten teams competing in the NCAA, the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals ended last year’s campaign placing ninth. With nine teams competing in Group A of this summer’s Filoil preseason tournament, they currently find themselves at number eight, dropping six of their games and only scoring one over the winless USJR Jaguars.
“Alarming na yung record eh. Kailangan na masolusyunan.” Stepping back in a troubled team after just stepping out of recovery is quite a burden. And coming up with remedies to problems many others could not seem to fix seems to be a lot harder. But veteran Munsayac claims to have gone through challenges similar to what his teammates are experiencing, and offers his hand to keep this ship from sinking. Several spectators have already given their two cents and identified the flaws and lapses in EAC’s game. But what actually goes on within and inside the team are things they might not probably be aware of. Lucky for us, Francis tried to put into context their many difficulties.
If you see these boys play inside the court, you would probably find them timid and easily intimidated by the big guys they are matched up against. “Sobrang physical ng liga. Pero dahil lahat bago, hindi pa sanay sa physicality ng laro.” This lack of toughness takes a toll on their confidence, and vice versa. “Katulad niyan. Kapag sinasabi ng iba na wala kaming laban dahil maraming nawala sa team, imbis na ipakita na they’re wrong, parang nawawalan pa tuloy ng gana maglaro.” Francis feels that this is a reflection of a lack in maturity, but he also does not blame the squad entirely for it. He mentioned that maturity comes with experience. And with the rookie-laden line up that they have now, it would take some time for the EAC Generals to ripen up.
Even being a few games and a few years ahead of the rest, Francis Munsayac admits that he still has a lot growing up to do himself. But feeling the sense of urgency, he takes on the challenge of doing just that, while lifting the team up with him in the process.
Among all the things left to do, the veteran chose to make this his first project: strengthening the bond and solidifying the unit. “Kailangan pa naming mag-gel. Importante ang chemistry sa laro eh, pero pati yun mukhang kinukulang pa kami.” Now he makes the conscious effort of bringing the team together, not just in games and practices but also even outside basketball. “Alam mo yung import namin, medyo nalulungkot dahil walang kasama. Yung iba, kanya-kanya pagkatapos ng ensayo. Yun sana ang gusto kong mabago.”
EAC begins their quest in the NCAA on July 2nd. And their first assignment is the defending champion San Beda Red Lions. With a new coach and a hopeful Francis Munsayac returning, can the Generals splash the season with a miraculous comeback?ÂÂÂ
