Is a sixth championship realistic for San Beda?
Ang laking tulong na sobrang family kami sa bawat isa. Ang taas ng teamwork at tiwala at ang sarap maglaro sa ganung environment.” --- Baser Amer

With less than a month away from the season’s opening, we asked the Red Lions if they plan to extend their five-year reign in the NCAA to six. Well, who wouldn’t want that, right? And when you have a handful of core players on their last playing year, the pressure is inevitably and definitely on.

We caught up with Baser Amer and asked him about the secret behind San Beda’s successful campaigns. He credited the coaching staff that he described to be sharp in spotting and developing talents. But more than that, they have fostered a culture that is warm and very inspiring.  And it is this bond that keeps them solid and strong. “Ang laking tulong na sobrang family kami sa bawat isa. Ang taas ng teamwork at tiwala at ang sarap maglaro sa ganung environment.” They lift each other up, which is why it’s no surprise that they’re the ones on top for quite some time now.

In the hopes of keeping the streak alive, the Mendiola-based boys are maximizing the time they have left to prepare and improve. In fact, Baser shares that upon entering the Filoil pre-season tournament, head coach Jamike Jarin asked to see a hundred percent effort from his squad. “Sabi sa amin ni coach na ngayon palang, ilabas na ang mga laro. Para makita pa kung ano yung kulang at kailangan pagtrabahuhan: individually and as a team. Walang favorites sina Coach. Lahat may contribution at lahat gumaling dapat.”

After losing to NAASCU’s Centro Escolar University Scorpions, they noticed a lack of consistency in the way they have been playing, especially on the defensive end. But being determined to defend the title, the San Beda Red Lions vow to address this and be on tiptop shape before their opener against hosts MIT Cardinals on June 27 at the Mall of Asia Arena. As for Baser Amer and the rest of the veterans, vow to make their last season with the college the most special one yet. “In preparation na rin para sa pangarap naming mag-PBA at siyempre para sa Beda.”
