JRU decimates Arellano in rematch of last year’s semis

Jose Rizal University entered the 91st season of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament still with a bitter taste from their mouths coming from a playoff defeat at the hands of Arellano University.

That bitter taste is sure to be gone now after the Heavy Bombers turned the Chiefs into rubble, 78-61, on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Cameroonian Abdel Poutouochi had for himself a powerful introduction to the league with 23 points and 11 rebounds while Teytey Teodoro added 11 markers of his own in JRU’s well-balanced offensive.

It was on the other end, however, that Vergel Meneses’ wards gave their opponents nightmares in only allowing 32 percent shooting from the field. After a 19-all first quarter, the Bombers clamped down and surrendered only nine points while scoring 21 of their ownto take a 40-28 lead into the half.

“Again, we played defense. That’s why we won,” coach Vergel Meneses said in his post-game conference.

The Chiefs’s struggles was best personified by Jiovani Jalalon, recognized for being a SEA Games gold medalist before the game, who ended with only four points from a 20 percent clip and seven turnovers.
