San Beda College begins its try for an unprecedented sixth consecutive championship on Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
The first team standing in the Red Lions’ way are the Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals who are seeking their own resurgence via the NCAA Season 91.
The centennial decade of the oldest collegiate league officially tips-off at 1:00 PM.
The Red Lions remain the favorites with the triumvirate of Ola Adeogun, Baser Amer, and Art dela Cruz all re-uniting for one last go-round. With an intact lineup, San Beda’s greatest challenge may very well be themselves by virtue of the fact they are still adjusting to new coach Jamike Jarin’s innovative ideas.
Moreover, the defending champions’ first opponents are flying high as the Cardinals own a come-from-behind preseason victory against them, 67-64. The return of Josan Nimes and entry of Nigerian Allwell Oraeme has Mapua feeling good in being able to call themselves contenders for the first time in coach Atoy Co’s tenure.
Meanwhile, a rematch of last year’s semifinals and a probable preview of a playoff matchup this season ensues at 3:00 PM when Arellano University clashes with Jose Rizal University.
Reigning Rookie of the Year Dioncee Holts and breakout point guard Jiovani Jalalon are back to spearhead the Chiefs towards bettering their unexpected runner-up finish in Season 91. En route to their first Finals appearance, Arellano beat their first opponents this season, 72-65.
However, that Heavy Bomber squad is much different from the one taking off this time around with the three-headed attack of Paolo Pontejos, Dave Sanchez, and Teytey Teodoro now piloting them. Coach Vergel Meneses’ boys also boosted their confidence via a strong preseason showing, something the Season 91 runners-up opted to skip altogether.
An opening ceremony will take place before both games and the all of the opening day in NCAA Season 91 will be shown LIVE on ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23 starting at 12:00 PM and will also be available for streaming on sports.abs-cbn.com.
