Itís a good sign that we are slowly but surely getting our acts together --- Red Cubs coach JV Sison

Josua Tagala and Germy Mahinay powered the six-peat defending champion San Beda Red Cubs punctuating their mastery over their last season’s finals series victim Mapua Red Robins, 80-63, Monday in the 91st NCAA Juniors basketball competition at The Arena in San Juan.

The power duo scored 13 points apiece with Tagala pulling down eight rebounds spiked by a pair of steals and a block for the Red Cubs. Tagala got seven boards and three assists.

Samuel Abuhijle scored 11 markers with six rebounds while John Lagumen finished with 10 points, all in the third quarter, for SBC, the league’s winningest team with 21 titles ahead of Mapua (20).

The Red Cubs controlled the game as early as the first quarter fending off repeated comeback attempts of the Red Robins eventually breaking the game open in the middle quarters by out

“It’s a good sign that we are slowly but surely getting our acts together,” said Red Cubs coach JV Sison, who lost most of his veteran players from last year to graduation.

“Kasi noong nakaraang pre-season talagang nag-struggle kami ng husto,” added Sison pertaining to his team failing to make the semis cut in the Fil-Oil pre-season tournament and losing to National Capital Region in the 2015 Palarong Pambansa basketball Final Four in Davao Del Norte.

Romuel Junsay paced the Red Robins with 19 points, Michael Enriquez had 16 while Jasper Salenga posted a double-double of 16 markers and 12 rebounds in a losing effort.

Meanwhile, the Arellano University Braves pounced on an undermanned and emotionally stressed Jose Rizal U Light Bombers to score a 103-34 rout in the second game.

Ira Bataller led four more Braves in double figures with 14 points.

Lars Sunga got 12 markers while Carlo Abadeza and Resty Fornis both finished with 11 point for AU. Guilmer Dela Torre scored 10.

John Sta. Maria is the lone Light Bomber in double digit production with 13 as the Nathaniel Gregorio-mentored squad only came up with eight healthy players ready to play after Toby Agustin and John Torre sat out due to injuries.

The Kalentong-based squad, who finished fourth last year, is still reeling from the loss of CJ Servillon who died after collapsing in a pre-season game last month in the same venue.
