Akhuetie and his baby fat need to adjust to NCAA physicality
BABY FAT. Nigerian Akhuetie belied assumptions that his body type is well-suited for the NCAA's fabled physicality.

Described as an unstoppable inside presence with the body type of LeBron James, Nigerian Bright Akhuetie admitted that he wasn’t ready for the NCAA’s fabled physicality.

“It’s different. I’ll have to make adjustments next time,” the Perpetual import told ABS-CBN Sports after their 70-61 win against Lyceum on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.

Despite the win, Akhuetie failed to turn in the dominant debut many expected after he won MVP honors in the 2015 Filoil Flying V Preseason Tournament. He finished with nine points, 11 rebounds, and five turnovers and was outplayed by teammate and also debuting reinforcement Prince Eze who had 21 markers and 10 boards to his name.

Expounding on his thoughts on the league’s brand of physicality, the 18-year-old Nigerian jested, “My body type is not really used to this yet. I’m just a kid. These are just baby fats (sic).”

Aside from being caught off-guard, Akhuetie also revealed that a bum ankle he sustained days before also bothered him. “I was actually struggling because of my hurt ankle, but I think I did better later on,” he said.

Numbers back-up the Perpetual import’s claim as he scored five of his total in the final frame to help Perpetual put away a feisty Lyceum side. If his debut is to be any indication, then we can only expect Akhuetie to shine brighter in his next outings.
