It’s just that isa sa mga nakalaban namin were ourselves here --- CSB head coach Gabby Velasco
The pressing defense of Letran Knights choked the College of St. Benilde Blazers to submission Tuesday.
Blazers coach Gabby Velasco acknowledges the fact that they were outplayed in the defensive end but also admitted that they were partly to blame on their opening day setback in the 91st NCAA Seniors basketball competition at The Arena in San Juan.
“Of course their press has something to do (with our loss) but partly also we have to be blamed here,” he said when approached by reporters inside their locker room.
“It’s just that isa sa mga nakalaban namin were ourselves here,” he added. “Wala kami sa focus and eventually nu’ng malaki na ang lead parang nawala na ang confidence namin.”
And the lack of concentration showed in the stats sheet.
CSB committed an atrocious 33 turnovers that the Knights converted to 32 points.
The Taft-based squad was also outrebounded 40-45 with Letran snatching 13 steals to punctuate a defensive clinic. The Blazers had to bleed for points in a 20-of-55 shooting clip.
Velasco said that Letran played the same full court trap, his boys were just unable to adjust.
“It’s exactly the same when we encountered them sa FiilOil ([pre-season tournament) last summer. I guess it’s just that nawala kami sa focus,” he said. “And what I saw is that it’s all excitement and it’s all adrenaline on us and we were not able to execute our game plan.”
Jonathan Grey scored 16 points while John Domingo had 10 to pace the Blazers.
“They did not give us a good impression in this opening game,” said the mentor.
