MAKING A STATEMENT. Rey Nambatac and Letran sent an early-season statement that they are back to contend.
They don't have any big man, but what Colegio de San Juan de Letran lack in size, they sure make up for in activity in the 91st Season of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.
New coach Aldin Ayo's non-stop full court pressure was an unsolvable riddle and Rey Nambatac scorched the nets for 25 points, including four triples, as the Knights claimed a statement win against the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, 78-62, on Friday at the San Juan Arena.
It was a close contest as expected after two quarters with Letran only ahead, 44-40, early in the third until Nambatac drilled a triple to unleash a 17-0 charge that pushed the lead to 61-40 at the two-minute mark of the third.
JRU was unable to trim the deficit to a single-digit the rest of the way to give a Knights a clear lane to a 2-0 record and a share of the early lead. Talking about a second straight impressive win, coach Aldin Ayo said in his post-game conference, “Wala namang nagbago. Same thing lang ginagawa namin. Order muna, tapos ilalabas yung gulo.”
Kevin Racal added 15 points and Letran converted 17 errors into a 12-5 advantage in terms of turnover points.
The now 1-1 Bombers were led by 11 markers each from Paolo Pontejos and Abdul Wahab Abdul Razak.
