19 SHADES OF GREY. Jonathan Grey came off the bench, but still ended as CSB's top scorer.
During their first couple of games in the NCAA 91 Men's Basketball Tournament, College of St. Benilde looked far from a team that got hungrier because of their almost finish a season ago.
The hunger finally showed on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena in the Blazers' 73-66 triumph over the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals.
Coach Gabby Velasco surprisingly used his top-gunner off the bench, but his ploy proved positive as Jonathan Grey ended with 19 points and five rebounds. More than the personal adjustment, it was defense that lifted CSB to their first win in three games.
The Blazers waxed hot in the early going with 27 points while limiting their opponents to only eight points in the first 14 minutes. “There was a great improvement sa defense namin,” a happy coach Gabby Velasco said in his post-game conference.
EAC was able to scrape to as close as 55-60 inside the last three minutes, but Travis Jonson made good on a four-point play to extinguish the flames of a rally and re-establish a 64-55 CSB lead with 2:33 to go.
The Generals again threatened at 59-65 with 1:15 ticks left until Grey mounted a personal 5-2 run to put the game out of reach.
Christ Mejos’ 17 points led the offensive for EAC who were defeated for the second straight time.
