Stags prevail in OT thriller against Bombers
STATEMENT WIN. San Sebastian's Rodney Santos claimed his first coaching victory at the expense of JRU's Vergel Meneses.

Seeing a template of how to beat their opponents on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena, San Sebastian College-Recoletos flustered the Jose Rizal University backcourt in the endgame for a rousing comeback win – their first in the 91st Season of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Ryan Costelo scored all 15 of his points in the final 15 minutes to propel the Golden Stags past the Heavy Bombers in overtime, 91-89, and give first-year head coach Rodney Santos his first victory from the sidelines.

Down by six, 68-74, inside the last two minutes of regulation, Costelo and Jamil Ortuoste hooked-up for an 8-2 surge while also forcing their backcourt counterparts into two turnovers. Dave Sanchez’ two misses from the free-throw line didn’t help JRU either as both sides needed an extra period to settle their score.

In overtime, three charities by Costelo jumpstarted seven unanswered points that boosted the Stags ahead, 83-76. San Sebastian managed their advantage until Jordan dela Paz mounted a personal 6-1 run to still give JRU a chance at 90-89 with 11 seconds remaining.

Sent to the line, Ortuoste made his first free throw and deliberately missed his second to shave more time off the clock. Seconds later, Sanchez’ desperation heave from the other side of the court fell way short to seal the Stags’ rise to 1-1 and the Bombers’ descent to 1-2.

Talking about his how it feels to get a first victory as a coach, Santos said in his post-game conference, “I hope this is the start of something good. Para sa akin as a new coach, masaya na ako na nakaisang panalo na ako rito.”

Michael Calisaan was the game-high scorer with 22 points while Bradwyn Guinto contributed a strong double-double of 17 points and 20 rebounds for San Sebastian.

Teytey Teodoro and Paolo Pontejos scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, but JRU’s backcourt – including Sanchez and Gio Lasquety – combined to miss 31 out of 45 attempts.
