Alanes outduels Grey as Lyceum picks up first win
RIGHT BACK AT YOU. Shaq Alanes made all the plays to give Lyceum win number one.

Jonathan Grey threw what seemed to be the cold-blooded dagger right in his face, but Shaq Alanes brought out three daggers of his own to grant Topex Robinson his first win as head coach of Lyceum of the Philippines University in the NCAA 91 Men's Basketball Tournament.

Right after Grey danced and then drilled a triple right over his outstretched arms, Alanes positioned himself for a wide open three and back on defense, guarded Grey into a failed drive then collared the rebound. Sent to the line, the confident guard then buried both charities to seal the Pirates' 72-69 triumph over the College of St. Benilde Blazers on Thursday at the San Juan Arena.

After a tight three quarters, Lyceum was able to gain a little bit of distance at 62-56 before CSB detonated an 8-0 blast to take a 64-62 lead inside the last four minutes.

Free throws by Joseph Gabayni sent the Pirates in front, 67-66, until Grey made the clutch three against Alanes. In the end, however, it was Alanes who came away with the go-ahead and insurance baskets.

A proud Robinson said in his post-game interview, "This was a test of character for us and we're happy we pulled through."

Alanes also top-scored for his team with 18 points to lead three others in double-digits for Lyceum's first victory in three attempts.

Grey poured in all but four of his 19 points in the final frame, but his two lay up attempts in the last minute both hit the front of the rim to see CSB fall to 1-3.
