TRUE COLORS. Radge Tongco, Dan Sara, and the rest of the San Beda backcourt are more than ready to step up in the absence of Baser Amer.
While Jamike Jarin and his coaching staff are being secretive about how long Baser Amer will be sidelined, the fact of the matter is that San Beda College's court general won't be on the floor anytime soon after re-injuring his shoulder.
Still, what is usually a devastating loss seems to be the last of the Red Lions' worries. "You can't replace a Baser Amer, but I kept reminding my teammates, especially the guards, that we're still San Beda even without Baser," Dan Sara, who replaced the injured court general on the starting lineup, told ABS-CBN Sports.
Indeed, Sara's backcourt-mates took his words to heart as they combined for 40 points and 14 assists to lead the Red Lions to their third win in four games.
Even though saddened that the court general who has taught them the tricks of the trade is nursing an injury, second-year guard Radge Tongco also sees some silver linings. "For me, blessing in disguise din kasi chance to step up and prove myself," he told ABS-CBN Sports.
Seen as Amer's heir apparent right from his rookie year, Tongco plans to take more of a leadership role while his mentor is recovering. "Lalo na next year na ako na yung isa sa magiging leader ng team, opportunity rin to para matuto lalo," he said.
Of course, that Amer's loss is seemingly not being felt may not be possible without the skillful roster management of Jarin. Asked why his reserves always seem ready to step up, he said, "Alam niyo naman ako. If you follow how I coach, kahit sa inter-barangay, I use all my players."
He added, "That's what you have to do because you will need all your 15 players."
