MUCH-NEEDED WIN. After two straight heartbreaks, Mapua finally broke through for their second win.
For the first time in the NCAA 91 Men's Basketball Tournament, Mapua Institute of Technology was not involved in a neck-and-neck contest.
Five players finished in double-figure scoring and the Cardinals shot a blistering 51 percent from the floor for an easy 101-72 win against the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals on Friday at the San Juan Arena.
Stephen Que and Justin Serrano poured in 17 and 16 markers, respectively, to complement Josan Nimes' 18 points. Allwell Oraeme took care of the interior with 12 rebounds and three blocks to help lift this season's hosts to their second victory in five attempts.
The Generals actually had a 14-12 edge in the opening salvo before Stephen Que drilled two triples to jumpstart 11 unanswered points for a 23-14 Mapua lead at the 8:44 mark of the second. On the back of eight treys, the Cardinals were on top, 45-33, by halftime.
All in all, the Intramuros-based school won the battle from deep, 13-6, and on transition, 33-16, while holding their opponents to a 39 percent shooting clip. "We played good defense and the offense followed," a relieved coach Atoy Co said in his post-game conference.
EAC remained winless in five games despite the best efforts of Hamadou Laminou who had 16 points and seven rebounds.
